How to Find the Right Pet Sitter

There are many ways to get a pet sitter.  Beg your relatives.  Repeatedly ask your neighbors even the ones whose names you never remember.  Make desperate invitations to other dog owners at the dog park.  These ideas, however, will not win you a loyal and loving pet sitter.  Lucky for you, there’s an easier way.  Rover.com is the nation’s largest pet sitter community matching thousands of pet owners with a qualified sitter in their area.  While it’s simple to get online to find a pet sitter, think about who would be the right sitter for your pets.  Here are a few suggestions on your search:

DO: Make a list of what you’re looking for in a pet sitter.

You already have certain expectations for how you want someone to love on your pets.  Write it down!  Be clear about what you need as an owner and what your pet needs.  There are plenty of people willing to walk your cuddly puppies.  However, who will be the right person to care for your senior dog on medication?  Who will have the energy to take your bundles of furry love for a run and bring them back exhausted?  Do you need someone who is flexible given your work schedule?  The bottom line is: know what you need so you know who to look for.

DON’T: Expect pet sitters to drop everything and come over.

Finding the right pet sitter requires planning ahead.  Consider what kind of pet care you need and when you need it.  Every Rover.com pet sitter provides their availability online, so you’ll be able to find out if their schedule meshes with yours.  Do you need weekend support only or someone to walk your dog during those long work days?  You may find a pet sitter who is available for last minute appointments, but don’t expect it upfront.

DO: Get online and investigate!

Rover.com has a wide variety of pet sitters with profiles, pictures, ratings, and reviews.  Scroll through and read what each sitter shares about their experience and animal-loving skills.  Check out their ratings and read reviews from other pet sitters.  You’ll be able to narrow down to a solid list of pet sitters in no time.

DON’T: Assume your pet will love the same people you do.

Don’t expect that your first choice for a pet sitter will be the right fit for your pets.  If you find a pet sitter that meets all of your criteria, be sure to schedule a meet and greet to make sure your pets are introduced and comfortable with someone new.  Your pets may be well behaved with you, but you don’t want to scare off your sitter in the event your pets don’t feel the vibe.

Don’t waste your time on blind date interviews with pet sitters you haven’t vetted first.  Let Rover.com play matchmaker for you and your pets!
